Newgrange passage entrance and kerbstone

This is the magnificent entrance to Newgrange. The dry-stone walling either side of the entrance was reconstructed during excavation, and curved to allow for the installation of steps to allow access to the passage. Note the beautiful spirals and lozenges on the entrance stone, which is officially designated the name Kerbstone 1.
Note the roofbox above the entrance – it is this space which allows the sunrise on the morning of Winter Solstice to penetrate the passage and illuminate the central chamber.
Below are two photos showing the entrance stone and its spiral designs. For more photos of Newgrange, inside and out, you can visit the Winter Solstice gallery.
