B and Newgrange - aligned with Summer Solstice sunset
| Site
B is one of the smaller satellite mounds near Newgrange, and is located
southeast of the great mound at the edge of the Boyne river. Observations
made by Richard Moore on
June 23rd, 2000, confirm that the Summer Solstice sun sets directly
at Newgrange when viewed from this mound. Alignments of this nature
are common in the Boyne Valley region. See also Site

this mound and its neighbour, Site A, George Coffey (Newgrange and
other incised tumuli in Ireland, 1912) states: "In the fields
adjoining the great tumulus at New Grange, some smaller tumuli deserve
notice . . . Below the great mound of New Grange two well-defined
tumuli may be seen showing as conical grass-covered hillocks on
the low-lying land by the river. They are marked A and B on map.
"A" is 220 feet in circumference and about 20 feet high;
"B" 300 feet in circumference and about the same height
. . . These mounds have probably been plundered, but are at present
evenly grass-grown." |
