Conradh na Gaeilge expressed great sympathy and sorrow on news of the death of Cáit Uí Chadhain, a most courageous woman from the Connemara Gaeltacht who spent most of her life in Dublin. Cáit was very involved in various aspects of the Irish-language life in the city. She raised her family through Irish, she attended Irish-language events and there was not an issue to do with Irish or the Gaeltacht that she did not have a part to play in when she was in the full of her health.

Cáit was particularly involved in Conradh na Gaeilge’s campaign for an Irish-language television service and she spent four days in prison for that same cause in 1983. With help from Conradh na Gaeilge, she took her case to the High Court to highlight RTÉ’s neglect of the Irish language, and she maintained that she did not need to buy a television licence as RTÉ were not providing a service for the Irish-language community or for the people of the Gaeltacht.

Íte Ní Chionnaith, past President of Conradh na Gaeilge said: “Though Cáit Uí Chadhain lost the case in the end, it was an important triumph in itself that the case had gone so far. Nine court cases concerning the television licence issue were initiated against Cáit but she resolutely stood her ground.”
