Gormley Highlights Role of Farmers in Preserving Nature in the Burren

The Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government, Mr John Gormley TD, today (26 January 09) praised the role of some local farmers in preserving the natural landscape of the Burren.

*The unique landscape of the Burren is not an entirely spontaneous, natural phenomenon, but is the result of farming practices over thousands of years,* said the Minister.

Launching a DVD on the BurrenLIFE Project - a farming for conservation initiative supported by the EU and the National Parks and Wildlife Service, with Teagasc and the Burren IFA - Minister Gormley said that the story of farming in the Burren is unique and stretches back six thousand years.

*The farmers working the land today are custodians of the Burren for future generations, so it*s important that their story is told. This DVD sets out to do this," added Minister Gormley.

Twenty farms are involved in the five-year conservation project, which involves allowing increased grazing of cattle to prevent the limestone, orchid-rich landscape from being taken over by scrub. With financial assistance from the project*s funds, scrub is removed, providing better access for cattle, dry stone walls are repaired and specially-designed feed is provided for the cattle in winter to ensure nutrition.

*The BurrenLIFE Project - Farming for Conservation in the Burren - has been a highly successful partnership between the Commission, the National Parks and Wildlife Service, Teagasc, Burren IFA and local farmers. The DVD illustrates the importance of securing the future of this work."

'This DVD tells the story of how these internationally important habitats are being managed by local Burren farmers through adapting their farming practices to a *farming for conservation* system, using simple, practical measures that are having a significant impact on the priority habitats of the Burren and the wider environment. The commitment of the farmers has been very impressive: they are in effect conserving the Burren through farming'*.

Ról na bhFeirmeoirí, leis an Dúlra a Chaomhnú sa Bhoirinn, curtha chun
suntas ag Ó Gormlaigh

Mhol an tAire Comhshaoil, Oidhreachta agus Rialtais Áitiúil, an tUas.
Seán Ó Gormlaigh TD, ról roinnt feirmeoirí áitiúla inniu (26 Eanáir 09)
le tírdhreach nádúrtha na Boirne a chaomhnú.

*Ní feiniméan nádúrtha, iomlán spontáineach é tírdhreach uathúil na
Boirne, ach tháinig sé de thoradh cleachtas feirmeoireachta i gcaitheamh
na mílte bliain,* arsa an tAire.

Agus DVD á sheoladh aige maidir le Tionscadal BurrenLIFE - tionscnamh
feirmeoireachta ar mhaithe leis an gcaomhú, a dtacaíonn an tAE agus an
tSeirbhís Páirceanna Náisiúnta agus Fiadhúlra leis, in éineacht le
Teagasc agus brainse na Boirne d*Fheirmeoirí Aontaithe na hÉireann -
dúirt an tAire Ó Gormlaigh gur scéal ar leith atá i gceist leis an
bhfeirmeoireacht sa Bhoirinn agus go bhfuil sé ar siúl le sé mhíle
bliain.

*Is éard atá sna feirmeoirí atá ag saothrú na talún sa lá atá inniu
ann ná feighlithe na Boirne do na glúine atá le teacht, agus tá sé
tábhachtach mar sin go n-inseofaí a scéal. Is é sin atá i gceist leis
an DVD seo,* arsa an tAire Gormlaigh freisin.

Tá fiche feirm i mbun an tionscadail chaomhnaithe, a mhaireann ar feadh
cúig bliana, agus is éard atá i gceist leis ná go ligtear d*fheirmeoirí
níos mó beithígh a chur ar féarach ionas nach leathnófar an scrobarnach
ar fud an tírdhreacha aolchloiche ar fad, a bhfuil saibhreas magairlíní
ann. Le cúnamh airgeadais ó chistí an tionscadail, baintear an
scrobarnach amach, rud a fhágann go mbíonn bealaí níos fearr ag beithígh
le teacht isteach, deisítear ballaí fuara cloiche agus soláthraítear
beatha, atá deartha go speisialta le cothú a chinntiú, do na beithígh sa
gheimhreadh.

*Comhpháirtíocht a bhfuil ag éirí go hiontach maith leis atá i
dTionscadal BurrenLIFE - Feirmeoireacht ar mhaithe leis an gCaomhnú sa
Bhoirinn - agus is iad rannpháirtithe na comhpháirtíochta ná an
Coimisiún, an tSeirbhís Páirceanna Náisiúnta agus Fiadhúlra, Teagasc,
brainse na Boirne d*Fheirmeoirí Aontaithe na hÉireann agus feirmeoirí
áitiúla. Léiríonn DVD seo an tábhacht le todhchaí na hoibre seo a
dhaingniú."

'Insíonn an DVD seo an scéal faoin mbealach bhfuil na gnáthóga seo,
lena mbaineann tábhacht idirnáisiúnta, á mbainistiú ag feirmeoirí
áitiúla na Boirne trína gcuid cleachtas feirmeoireachta a chur in
oiriúint do chóras *feirmeoireachta ar mhaithe leis an gcaomhnú*,
agus bearta simplí praiticiúla á n-úsáid acu, atá ag imirt tionchair
shuntasaigh ar na gnáthóga sa Bhoirinn a dtugtar tús áite dóibh agus ar
an gcomhshaol ar bhonn níos leithne. Tá tiomantas na bhfeirmeoirí tar
éis dul i bhfeidhm go mór orm: go bunúsach, tá an Bhoirinn á caomhnú
tríd an bhfeirmeoireacht acu*.
