Doh!
I'm so stupid. For two months, the Forum index has been exactly the same every day. No new members, no new posts. I never twigged. We were hacked back in June and those boyos caused an awful mess, replacing a load of index files. I managed to get the site back up and running within a week, but never noticed the problem with the Forum.
I hope I have it working properly again. Sorry to those whose messages went unanswered!
There's still a bit of a problem, though. The "New Post" icon is not appearing on the index page when there is a new post. Mmmmm . . .
I'll have to go and ask the community at PhPBB what to do.
Unless, that is, any of you intrepid stone lovers know anything about PHP??
