Knowth kerbstone

The meaning of the megalithic art is one of the great outstanding mysteries of the 5,000-year-old Boyne Valley monuments. What does it mean? Is it a language? Is it purely abstract art, or is it representational? Do these carvings represent scientific data, perhaps astronomical observations, made in remote prehistory? The stones attempt to speak out to us across time. At Knowth, the visitor is presented with a vast array of carved symbolism, etched into the huge stones which make up this enigmatic site. Here we find a quarter of all known megalithic art in Western Europe. Knowth is the Louvre of the megalithic artists. Many of the carvings are faded and eroded, but a good lighting technique reveals them in all their glorious detail. What do you make of the ancient art?
